Music of the Coronavirus*

We have been going through extraordinary times in the last months. A tiny little virus has locked almost all the people around world in their houses, affected all our everyday habits, the social and economic life of the whole world, and probably the politics as well. After almost half a year it seems a little bit under the control, and many countries are trying to ease the very strict restrictions, normalising the life again, but the threat is still there and experts are already talking about the second wave. On the other hand it seems that somehow we got used to live with this crisis.

During this global outbreak we all have faced ourselves and the institutions that we have built as well. For example, it has shown us how fragile the "unions" are that we have founded, or maybe the “real” foundations that they were built on. The actions (or "non-action" at all) of "European Union"; the very modern countries stealing the protective masks from each other; or confiscating each other's medical supplies. Probably the world will not be the same as before if the outbreak continues for some more of months. But the aim of this article is not making assessments about politics, though.

This - propably the first in the world history as such - global outbreak has affected/is still affecting all our everyday habits, cultural and social activities and changing them, too. One of those affected has been/is also music and musical activities. Because of the precautions and restriction to go out many cultural events, and also concerts, had to be cancelled which put musicians economically in hard situations. The cancelling of weddings, concerts and festivals in which music has a central role, are also opportunities for musicians to continue their musical and economical life. Though the concern of some people was not only economical, but to sing their song freely. Helin Bölek and Ibrahim Gökçek, members of Turkish protest music band Grup Yorum lost their lives in a hunger strike to protest banning on their music/musical style in those Corona days. Bölek was in the 288th, and Gökçek was in the 323rd days of strike when they lost their lives.[1]

However, music is coming from social and cultural life, affected by what is going on around, and is a way of expressing the feelings, emotions, ideas of individuals as musicians or also community. Though the concerts and festival were cancelled, some lost their lives for the sake of their music, music did not stop as well as musical activities.

During Corona days many songs were composed and sung related to either coronavirus itself or the situation we were/are in. There are some researches such as the Global Corona Playslist at the University of Arizona and articles and news about corona and music.[2] The most interesting one to me was the one about setting the structure of the virus to music, which made me think about the AI (Artificial Intelligent) and making music, and also music of the future.[3] The Project is led by Markus J. Buehler who is not a musician but a material scientist and engineer at the MIT.[4] They used a sonification technique in which they assigned each amino acid a unique note in musical scale and converted the entire protein into a musical score, which can be called “music of Coronavirus”. The research team choose the instruments and the main one is Japanese koto. It is music coming from the movements of the molecular elements of the virus, taking 1 hour 43 minutes 48 seconds, like a senfonical concert.  It is amazing, and I would say it is very calming in contrast to the danger of the coronavirus itself. (Here to listen: https://soundcloud.com/user-275864738/viral-counterpoint-of-the-coronavirus-spike-protein-2019-ncov).

The question here is; even though the notes were given by the researchers, is the composer also a “human being” or AI (Artificial Intelligence)? At the final stage, the product can be considered being from the “human being”, but what is next? Will making music need a human itself anymore? Or are we going to listen to more music made by AI?

It seems that the coronavirus has already changed our everday life, it probably will change our perception towards music, too.

* This article was first written in April and before finishing, my computer had broken with all my data inside it; and because of the restrictions due to Coronovirus I couldn't get it repaired until the end of May. Then, I wrote again and made some small changes...

Music and Corana or Music in the the Corona Days!

We are all having hard times nowadays because of the global outbreak of CoronaVirus which started at the end of 2019 in China and spread all around the world in a very short time. The number of cases and deaths as well is rising every minute; authorities urged people to stay at home; countries impose nationwide curfew one after another. It is a kind of surreality, and we feel like being the middle of a dystopic movie; we are living actually in a dystopic movie that we were used to watching on TV. Our way of life has been changed; had to be changed! Because, we can not go out, meet our friends to have a cup of coffee or tea; we even can not visit our own families. I am one of those who is away from his children, wife and I am sure there are many other cases like me.

The crisis we faced and being stuck at home as a result of this crisis has an effect on our psychology, too. Except trying to keep ourselves, our families, relatives, and friends safe by warning them to stay at home, we try to find some ways to escape from this surrealistic situation. Of course, some people are watching movies – mostly sci-fi, and mostly about outbreaks, I would say –, some people find some other ways to get along. Writing is another way, at least for me, even though it took over one week to concentrate on it. And now that we are here, I am going to try writing about musical activities on Corona Virus / or related to the outbreak, there are also funny examples.

It seems that another way we, as human beings, have found to get over this situation is music. As Özge Ç. Denizci who writes about music says "music will safe us from this crisis".[1] I do not know if music is going to save us from this crisis, but something is very clear – whatever happens, music will help people.

In one sense, music can also be seen as a human activity to express one's own feelings and thoughts with a certain rhythm and melody, accompanied by an instrument, or without an instrument. In some cases the music is made to deliver a message; in some cases, this is an activity for "popularity"; or to entertain the others, to motivate, to show solidarity with one another, and just to express one's feelings. Whatever happens or has happened in the course of history, some people have expressed their feelings about it with a certain melody and rhythm. They have made songs about it, either to entertain the others or just to express their emotions. It is a kind of social reaction to what happens in the surrounding, the same just like in these Corona days!

It is very clear that everything has been affected by this outbreak, so does music and musical activities. Like many other activities, musicians had to cancel their concerts but did not stop their musical activities. Some started giving online concerts. Some directly/indirectly made music about the Corona Outbreak. Let's look at some examples of those reactions from the country I live in and also from the world in different languages. Some of them are just produced for fun, to entertain people; some are produced as a popular culture material, and some for solidarity, some for raising awareness, but all are kind of expressing emotions.

First of all, I have to say that there (was) is a band named CORONA; an Italian Eurodance band. The leading singer is, Olga de Souza from Brazil. Their "Rhythm of the Night" is very popular on youtube. For a live performance, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvwX81COn6Y
And for the information about the band, see: http://www.coronadance.it/

It is also a coincidence that music, a Coronavirus outbreak, and Italy come with each other. People started to think more music when Italian started giving live concerts on their balconies to motivate each other and show solidarity with each other in the middle of the crisis when they were locked in. Here is one of the scenes from those concerts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q734VN0N7hw
(Coronavirus: quarantined Italians sing from balconies to lift spirits). And another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_rLw6SCSmE

They actually spread the idea of making music at home, on the balconies and sharing it with people, which probably shows that "we still have spirit", "we are still alive".

Then similar scenes started to be seen in other countries, one of which is the German city Bamberg, in which people on their balconies/rooftops are singing the Italian revolutionary song 'Bella Ciao' in solidarity with Italy whose death toll rises every day. It can also be considered as an apology for that "European Union" (if there is any, anymore!) that has done nothing to help one of the members of the Union!

The examples are not only from Europe. There are also musicians from different parts of the world singing about Coronavirus. For example, from Turkey, the country I am living, both in Kurdish and Turkish (and even English!).

In Turkey, even before the outbreak cases had been seen, Aydın, a local singer Aydın from Hakkari province, a South-eastern city, composed a song and shot a video-clip to warn people about coronavirus: Öpme! (Don't Kiss!). I remember telling my friends that this song and video-clip should be published as a public service announcement ;-) to make people aware of the disease: Here is the link to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ6k1qBSUvU

Soon other musicians started doing the same, singing "corona" songs such as Kurdish wedding musician: Korona: Nexweşiya Çîn û Japona (Corona. The disease of Chinese and Japanese)! which has unintended racist words in it. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls3ahhIYWEg

Many similar songs can be found on youtube both in Kurdish and Turkish, probably in other languages, too. A funny one in Kurdish: Korona vîrus derketiye, ziravê me qetiya ye! (Corona Virus has come up, we all are scared!). Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwPoq4LfK2o
It is even adapted to a dance which makes it funnier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FSaxsjMkgY

Beside those funny examples, there are more "serious" ones. Chinese musicians composed an "Anthem" for this outbreak, performed by pop stars such as Jackie Chan, Wang Leehom, Xiao Zhan, and Tong Liya. The emotive video-clip of Believe Love Will Triumph, which has also English subtitles and was published by state media Global Times consists of pictures of Chinese coronavirus patients, ending with We gather to power the people of China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmrp9BTLOJ0

As I said above, the outbreak has an effect on everything, our everyday life, our habits, and our formal education system. In many countries, online lectures are being imposed. It seems that some are not prepared for this kind of lecturing. A Professor of History and Political Science Department at the Missouri University of Science and Technology Dr. Michael Bruening complains about this new situation by singing a song with his guitar adapted from Gloria Gaynor's I will Survive. The video was uploaded on March, 16, and since then got 2,31 B subscriptions and over 2000 comments showing that Dr. Bruening has already articulated many people's feelings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCe5PaeAeew

There are also other kinds of music videos uploaded on youtube in one or another way related to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Stay safe from coronavirus by Persian music is one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsB0FCuHOSc

Another one is Funky house music against the coronavirus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjtxadAdMco

The last one is once again from Kurdish musicians. Probably, it is for the first time in the last 30 years that Kurds voluntarily did not celebrate the Newroz festival outside in the streets because of the outbreak. But it did not keep them away from celebrating it, either. Some listed all the songs related to Newroz and put them to their iTunes, Spotify, youtube, twitter, Facebook pages and shared them with their followers to listen together. But some like the ones in the video played and sung in a teleconference system, published on MA Music Facebook account with a title of Di Rojên Corona da Newroz (Newroz in the Corona Days), 21 March 2020 (https://www.facebook.com/1307329805996537/videos/154369865763450/?type=1).

Music has been / and still is an important part of our human activities. No matter what happens we will not abandon music, and probably music will not abandon us either. It also can be said that even though at the beginning we all felt depressed, and did not know what to do, the more we are getting used to staying at home, the more we tried to be more productive. And it seems that music is somehow the biggest helper for us to stay "alive", to be more productive.

Stay safe with music!

Tişta min fam kir Mehmet Aktaş bi tena serê xwe û bi hemû bêderfetiyan vê festîvalê li dar dixe, û her weha kafeya ku bi navê Lorî vekiriye jî ji bo mazûvaniya hemû mêvan û beşdaran bi kar tîne. Heftiyekê xwarin-vexwarin aîdê Lorî bû. Bi gotineke din Mehmet Aktaş bi tena serê xwe (bêguman heval û kesên derdorê, xebatkarên Lorî û sînemagerên Kurd bi awayekî pê re ne) karê komele û saziyan dike û loma jî bi ya min eger rojekê xelatek bo sînemaya kurdî bê dayîn, divê yek ji xwediyê vê xelatê jî Mehmet Aktaş be.
Ez dîrej nekim, ji ber bêderfetbûnê û pirsgirêkên din tenê ez di dawiya heftiyê de du rojan beşdarî vê çalakiyê bûm, lê di van her du rojan de min gelek kes nas kirin, derhêner, lîstikvan û çalakvanên sînemaya kurdî, lê dîsa mixabin min li kêm filman temaşe kir. Yek jin wan filmê Bahman Gobadî yê bi navê Life on the Border- Jiyana li ser sînor bû ku Gobadî bi heft zarokên penaber ji Kobanî û Şingalê çekiribû. Gobadî kamera daye destê wan zarokên derhêner da ku bi çavê wan rewşa wan pêşî temaşavanan bike.
Yeke din jî belgefîlma Zanyar Adamî ya bi navê The Guerilla Son-Kurê Gerilla/Peşmerge bû ku hikayeteke şexsî ya xwe vedigot. Zanyar Adamî gava dixwest hikayeya bavê xwe bi kameraya xwe bikişe û belgefîlma wê paşerojê çêbike, rastî hikayeye xwe dihat û ev hikayeya zarokekî ku hê 5 salî ji dê û bavê xwe qût bûbû û bi tena serê xwe ber bi Swêde hatibû şandin bi awayekî hestiyar peşberî me dikir. Zanyar Adamî tevî her dû kurên xwe ew jî beşdarî film bû û bersiva pirsên temaşevanan da.
Dîmenek ji panela li Cafe Lorî
Roja din li Cafe Lorî panelek hebû li ser mijara "Di Dema Şer de Çêkirina Fîlman" ku Dr. Yılmaz Özdil, Hussein Hassan (Derhêner-lîstikvan) û Ayoob Ramadan (Wezîrê Çandê yê Herêma Behdînan) wek axaftvan bûn. Di vê panelê de her weha li ser pirsgirêkên sînemaya kurdî jî hinek nêrîn hatin bilêvkirin. Lê ji bo min tişta herî balkêş ew bû ku sînemagerên kurd zêde li ser "sînema"yê kûr dibin û girêdanên wê bi disîplînê din re zêde li ber çavan nagirin. Bi ya min pêwîstiya sînemaya kurdî bi nêrînên derveyî sehaya sînemayê jî hene wek antropolojî, sosyolojî, zimannasî û hwd.

Çend nêrîn derbarê sînemaya kurdî
Di vê nivîsê de ezê jî li gorî xwe û çavdêrîyên xwe- hêvî dikim wek hedderbaskirinê newe dîtin- fikir û pirsên ku derbarê sînemaya kurdî bi min re çêbûne parve bikim;
Dikare bê gotin ku mijara sînemaya kurdî bi awayekî şer û travmayên girêdayî şer in. Ji aliyekî ve normal e ji ber ku erdnîgarî û civak di nav şer de ne û derhêner û lîstikvan jî -heta niha- bêhtir ew kesên ku di nav şer de mezin bûne, an jî bi awayekî têkildarî şer bûne, aliyekî wan her di nav şer de bûye. Û xuya ye ku dê hê ev şer li ser erdîgariya kurdan û Kurdistanê dewam bike. Lê her çiqasî şer hebe li vê erndîgariyê, û sînema jî nikaribe xwe dûrî vî şerî bihele, hikayeyên din jî hene di nav jiyana kurdan de û bi ya min ev hikaye li benda derhêner û çêkeran in. Belkî jî nifşên nû dê berê xwe bidin van hikayeyan û rengekî din ên civakê pêşî bîneran bikin. Bi ya min ev yek ji bo bibingehebûna sînemaya kurdî jî pêwîst e. Wekî din li gorî fikra min ev nîşandana şer û mexduriyeta kurdan bi xwe re "self-oryantalîzm"ekê jî tîne û piştî demekê êdî bîneran jî aciz dike. Yanî wek pirs mirov bipirse; gelo dê heta kengî şer û travma mijarên sînemaya kurdî bin? gelo sînemaya kurdî dê bikaribe -an jî kengî dê bikaribe- xwe ji van mijaran dûr bixe û berê xwe bide mijarên din?
Belkî jî ev girêdayî niştecîbûnê ye ji ber ku "modernîzma kurdî" li derve ava bûye. Edebiyata modern, roman, mûzîk, wêne, û her weha sînema, loma dibe ku ji dûr ve tenê ev mijar hatibin "dîtin". Lê êdî ew dem derbas dibe û gelek kes li hûndir dest bi kar kirine. Dibe ku ev jî pêvajoyeke derbasiyê be û demeke lixwegerînê be ji bo sînemaya kurdî.
Hêvî dikim di pêşerojê de bi reng û deng û "nasname"yeke xwe sînemaya kurdî jî -mesele wek ya îranê- bikeve nav qada sînemaya dinyayê de. Bêguman ev jî bi alîkarî, hevkarî û barhilgirtina hemu saziyên kurdan dê pêkan be.
Lidarxistina festîvalan bi awayekî rêya derfetên bi vî rengî vedikin. Lê bi baweriya min ji bilî festîvalan platformên din jî divê bên avakirin. Wek mînak, ji bilî çend tez, pirtûk û nivîsên li ser înternetê zêde derbarê sînemaya kurdî zêde çavkanî tune ne. Îro em dibînim kovarên akademîk ên kurdî jî derdikevin, loma kovareke akademîk derbarê sînemaya kurdî jî îro dikare bê derxistin. Ev kovar hem dikare bibe platformek bo sînemaya kurdî û hem jî hevgirêdanek di navbera sînemaya kurdî û disîplînên din de. Mijar berfireh e û hêjayî niqaşê ye.
Me bi 8emîn Festîvala Filmên Kurdî ya Berlînê dest pê kir, û bi nêrîn û hêvî û peşnîyazan qedand. Wekî kesekî derveyî qada sînemayê nêrînên min jî derbarê festîval û sînemaya kurdî de ev in.

The Hundredth Years of Sykes-Picot and Kurds

15th of May is celebrated as 'Kurdish Language Day' among Kurdish people in Turkey (North Kurdistan) since 2006 and also in the 'North-affiliated' Rojava. The day refers to the publishing of the Hawar journal in the Latin alphabet by the Kurdish linguist Celadet Bedirkhan in 1932.

While that day is celabrated by some Kurds, mainly Kurds who are using the Latin alphabet, the next day 16th of May concerns all Kurds regardless in which part they are living. Because their social, cultural and political situation somehow depend on this day which it is the hundredth anniversary of the 'famous' Sykes-Picot agreement which had been signed 100 years ago by the British Mark Sykes and his counterpart George Picot.

The confidential Sykes-Picot agreement has turned 100 years today, but its effects can still be seen in the region, even though it had never applied legally. The idea behind the agreement was the partition of Ottoman lands in the Middle East  between two super powers of that time, France and the British Kingdom, and also to create areas of power for themselves. The lands that were discussed to be divided up were legally Ottoman's but in reality it was Kurdish inhabited area, and the ones who would be affected were also Kurds.

The agreement had not been applied because the third partner, Russia revealed the agreement after the October Revolution and withdrew from the agreement. It had not been applied but it would not be wrong to say that the later agreements were constructed on its idea.

It is, as mentioned above, obvious that the most affected people by the Sykes-Picot agreement were and are still Kurds. After the Ist World War the 3 new 'nation-states' emerged and Kurdish inhabited Ottoman lands were divided up between those states which left Kurdish people stateless and 'divided'. If one reason was the super-powers' self-interests, the next one was that Kurdish politics were not united and they also were not sure what they wanted, and in the ground, the 'nationalistic' ideas were not spread out among Kurdish people. It can be said that their main motivation was their 'religious identity' rather than their 'national' identity, and in Anderson's aspect they were not an 'imagined community' in the Kurdish people's mind. Kurds were in the battle fronts in the War, but they could not make to be at the table after that.

As a result of the agreements based upon 'Sykes-Picot' ideas, Kurds were not only divided up geographically, but also, socially, culturally, and politically. The latter ones are more important because what problems they have been facing now are emerging from those 'partitions'. Using different alphabets and also the celebration of 'Kurdish National Day' in the 'North' (and north-affiliated areas) is just one of them.

Coming back from Kurdistan Region a friend told me that he felt more closer to 'Turks' culturally than 'Kurds' in KRG or another part. He is not the only one and it is a cultural result of 100 years dividing up which makes him feel like this. Still defining himself as a Kurd in the broader 'Kurdish nationality' including all Kurds from all parts is another aspect of Kurdish nationalism developing in recent years.

After 100 hundred years, today Kurds are again in the battle fronts against IS(IS), with the allies of super powers and this time differently they are also protecting their own lands while the Middle East is undergoing a re-shaping process.

Super powers, namely USA and Russia, acting according to their interests seem that they want to keep the 'official' borders- at least for now- drawn a hundred years ago and try to solve the problems between those 'drawn' borders because of their 'nation-state' allies in the region, which creates another handicap. They seem to be in the searching process for a solution that does not injure both their and their allies' interests.

The main point for Kurds in this situation is themselves and their acting with each other. It is also important for them to look at their history and take lessons from it.

In this point, the conference held at the University of Sulaimani on 3-4th of May on the subject of "The Kurdish Case and Sykes-Picot Agreement: From 1916 to 2016" was very important. It is a good point that Kurds are discussing the history and Kurdish case in the academic sense in the international conference even though there were not too many academics from other parts.

Behind all the political interests of every political group or party such conferences will contribute other perspectives on solving the Kurdish case to Kurdish politicians and people, and also their allies in the re-shaping process of the region.
